Living on a Restless Planet: Using Space Technology to Study Earthquakes, Aquifers, Volcanoes, and More

Speaker: Dr. Andrea Donnellan, JPL

Dr. Andrea Donnellan is a geophysicist at JPL and a research professor at USC. She integrates satellite technology with high performance computer models to study earthquakes, plate tectonics, and the corresponding movements of the Earth's crust. She is currently NASA's Applied Sciences Program Area Lead for National Disasters , and Principal Investigator of NASA's Quake Sim and other projects. She has also been the Project Scientist of a mission to study natural hazards, ice sheets, and ecosystems., and Deputy Manager of the JPL Science Division. She has conducted field studies in California in the region of the Northridge earthquake, the Ventura basin, and the San Andreas fault. She has also carried out field studies in Antarctica, Mongolia and Alaska. She has a BS degree from Ohio State, MS and PhD degrees from CalTech, and an MS degree in Computer Science from USC.

Our world has been and remains a dynamic system characterized by both subtle and dramatic changes. These are exhibited in climate change, volcanic activity and earthquakes and the associated impacts on our lives. This talk will cover how these phenomenon are characterized using space and airborne based technology which in turn are used to understand our past, identify the impact on our infrastructure such as the water system and offer a basis for estimating the future.
